Ahhhhh......summer.........

A beautiful weekend in Upstate New York-and hopefully wherever you are too.  Things will be turning autumnal soon, but we still got a lil' bit of summer left.  We think this gorgeous photo by Phil Bishop of Gulfport Florida says it all.  It will be part of the projected slideshow at the PHONOGRAPHY opening in a few short weeks.  Thanks for such a great contribution Phil!

3 weeks to go!

Only 3 weeks till PHONOGRAPHY opens!!  We are soooooooooo excited by the work we have received already-it's gonna be a FABULOUS SHOW!!  We have over 200 images for our slideshow and will begin collecting work from our local participants next week.  We cannot WAIT to see what people bring in.  We were a bit worried about leaving the parameters of the exhibit so general, but felt much better when we were told by the Tech Gardens artist in residence, Ty Marshal, that it is GOOD to give people a curatorial challenge.  Thanks Ty!  A few people have told us their ideas for display and presentation and so far there's a HUGE variety.  Just what we were hoping for!!  We encourage all PHONOGRAPHERS to "think outside the box" and come up with a unique and creative display for your photos.  Or go with a straightforward frame or grouping of frames.  That's the great thing about PHONOGRAPHY-it can be whatever you want it to be.

Hooray for RA-LINS!!!!!!!

We have a super sweet deal for all you PHONOGRAPHERS out there!  RA-LINS Discount-one of our favorite locally owned businesses wants to be a part of PHONOGRAPHY and is going to offer HALF PRICE PRINT PROCESSING FOR ALL PHONOGRAPHY PARTICIPANTS!!!!!  Wowza yowza-how great is that??  The largest size print that they can make is 24x24, which normally costs $40, but will only run you phonographers $20!!  All other size prints will also be half off the normal price too.  If you are haven't made prints before, Wesley in the photo department is the man to know.  He has offered to help out anyone from the show who needs it!  You can reach him at:

He will guide you through the printing process and let you know everything you need to bring to the store to get your fabulous prints ready for the PHONOGRAPHY show!  Thanks Wesley!

We are so grateful to RA-LINS for this generous offer!  If you've never been to this fabulous store-you need to check it out.  They are located at 625 Burnet Avenue and are open 7 days a week. RA-LINS was opened in 1953 by Bernie Radin and Herman Zeitlin and it is still owned and operated by members of the 2 families.  They sell just about everything you can imagine-appliances, luggage, cameras, electronics, jewelry, housewares, etc.  But this ain't your typical "big box" store.  Uh uh!!  There is a friendly, knowledgeable staff in every department.  You won't have to roam aisles looking for a sales person.  You won't be told "that's not my area" by an obnoxious teenager who can barely look up from his texting.  And the best part of shopping at this store is knowing that you are keeping your dollars in the community by supporting a locally owned business!

Some day my prints will come

Don't have a good printer?  That doesn't mean you can't take part in PHONOGRAPHY!  It's easy and surprisingly inexpensive to get prints of your cell phone photos.  If you download your photos to a thumb drive and take them to any local copy center, they can fix you up with some pretty good quality prints.  If you want to order them online, here's some online services for printing:

  1. PostalPix — Use this iPhone app to print four-inch squares from your Instagram library for only 30 cents each. Fast shipping, matte finish, professional quality resolution, and the convenience of mobile shopping make this our first stop for Instagram prints. They even sell just-right square 4-inch wooden frames.
  2. CanvasPop — Those filtered photos are worthy of an at-home gallery. Create a high-resolution 12-inch square or 20-inch square stretched canvas print for the temporary price of $30 and $60, respectively. Buy multiple canvases for an artful wall vignette.
  3. Printstagram — The company offers multiple ways to print Instagram photos, but the 20-by-40-inch posters will make the most stunning addition to a living room wall. Between 50-400 photos are arranged in a clean grid on thick, archival paper for $25.

If you use Hipstamatic, try this

http://community.hipstamatic.com/hipstamart

We did a test run and had prints made by all of these companies we were happy with the quality of all of them!  Most of them offer prints in a variety of sizes and packets, so check them all out to see which one suits your needs.

Photoquai

Last year while strolling along the River Seine in Paris last autumn, I stumbled upon Photoquai, a biennial photography exhibit put on by the musee du quai Branly.  I can't imagine a more lovely setting for a photography exhibit-on the banks of the river, in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower.  Among the many interesting photos were a collection of shots by Chilean photographer Roberto Candia.  Candia is a photojournalist who was covering the rescue efforts of the miners trapped underground in the Atacama Desert in October 2010.

To capture the full strangeness of the situation, Candia used his cell phone to photograph the trivial objects and other signs that symbolized the waiting process and the families' anxiety as time dragged by and the outcome remained uncertain. Plan B – the second rescue attempt, which proved to be successful – used a special capsule to extract the miners. Candias personal plan B was the cell phone and an application that turned it into an instamatic, producing square, low definition images with altered colors.
Drawing on 33 images captured during the wait, the photographer assembled 33 fragments, among them cranes, the journalists' observation deck, children’s drawings, good luck cards, the morning light and paths winding out into the desert. Candia offered another vision of things, a narrative that avoided the over-dramatic. This break with his usual way of working resulted in an idiosyncratic coverage of the period between the announcement of the collapse and the ultimate exit of the miners.

The Rules

There are only 2 rules, or guidelines-as we prefer to think of them, for the PHONOGRAPHY SHOW:

1.  your photos must be taken with a cell phone camera.  Any camera or app that you use on your
phone is fine.  Feel free to use any sort of photo editing app you have on your phone

2.  your prints must be SQUARE.  They can be any size, but should be square.  We are expecting a
huge number of participants, and wanted to have a thread of continuity in the photos

Oh!  and one more thing.  Due to the fact that the gallery is in an office building, we have been asked that no nude photos be included.  We do not like putting restrictions on content, but we had to agree to this to use the space.  So sorry, no nudity folks!  Save those for your Facebook page:)

CALL FOR PHOTOS!

PHONOGRAPHY wants you!!  If you take photos using your cell phone camera, then you are just the artist we are looking for.  Do you print out your photos and enjoy them "off the screen"?  Well, if not , PHONOGRAPHY will make you want to!  PHONOGRAPHY aims to take your photos off the screen and onto the gallery wall.  So many folks take amazing pictures with their phones, and we want to showcase your talent.  PHONOGRAPHY will be a gallery showing of photographs taken exclusively with cell phone cameras.  The photos MUST be taken with a phone camera.  Any app you want to use is acceptable, but we want the prints of your photos to be SQUARE.  This is to give the huge variety of photos we will be showing a thread of continuity.  Many of the apps that we ourselves use (Snapseed, Hipstamatic, Instagram etc) produce square photos, and most of the editing apps we checked out can crop photos to square easily.  We realize that not everyone has a photo printer, so we will be posting info in the next couple weeks on the various photo printing options that we have researched.  It is very easy and surprisingly affordable to get prints made!

The show will open on SEPTEMBER 20, 2012 at the TECH GARDEN in downtown Syracuse.  If you would like to be a part of our show, please email us by AUGUST 20, 2012.  We will reserve ONE  24x24 inch space for all who contact us by that date.  You are welcome to show as many photos as you want that fit in that amount of space.  One giant one, lots of little ones, it's up to you.  Just be sure that your photos are SQUARE.   Space is first come, first served, so if you want wall space, let us know ASAP.  IF we have any space left on that date, we will contact all artists on the list and offer a second space to those who have already registered as a participant.

Once we have a FINALIZED list of participants, we will contact you all with details on dropping off your work and more info on the opening.  (We anticipate that to be around September 3-8th, tentatively)  ALL WORK MUST BE READY TO HANG!  We encourage you to be creative in your set up!  The organizers of the show have experience in gallery curating, visual merchandising, architecture,  and all sorts of areas of display-and we would be happy to help you with your set up.  Just ask us!  We have lots of creative ideas to share and will be posting some great display ideas on the blog.

If you are interested in having your photos in the PHONOGRAPHY show, please email us at:

fonography@gmail.com

Once you contact us with your request to reserve a space, we will put you on our list of participants, and follow up with a confirmation email.  Then all you have to do is start getting creative with your phone!  C'mon!  It's gonna be FUN!

What is PHONOGRAPHY?

Does it seem to you that everyone is a photographer these days?  Technology has gotten us to the point where any time we are visually inspired, we take out our cell phones and snap a picture. Many of us have become instant artists, documenting our everyday lives.   Apps  offer endless possibilities to add color, filters and effects to these snapshots.   It's like having a photography studio in the palm of your hand!  The next step for most people is to download their photos, and share them online.  While the ease of sharing photos this way is great for our busy, scattered lives it is also lacking something.  When photos are viewed exclusively online, the physical experience is lost.  This way of viewing images is relatively new, yet it seems to be completely entrenched.  When's the last time you asked to see someones photos and were handed a stack of prints?  It is assumed that when we view someones photos, it will be on a screen.

We have come such a long way since the first photograph was taken 180 years ago!  Advances in photo technology have always happened rather quickly.  Joseph Niepce took the worlds first photograph in 1826, and by the mid 1800s, photography had become a product for mass consumption.  Development of color photography,  smaller cameras, filters, Kodachrome, instant camera, flash, stereoscopics, Polaroid, all changed how we photograph.  The one constant throughout all these changes, however,  was the final result-a photograph that was tangible.  Something you could hold in your hand.  The advances made in digital technology  in the more recent past have taken this tactile experience out of our hands and onto the computer screen.

PHONOGRAPHY wants to change that.  We want you to enjoy your photos in a new/old way. We want you to print out your cell phone photos, and enjoy photography as it was done in the past when photos were captured on film, processed, developed, enlarged, framed, and hung on walls.  We LOVE what the amazing new cell phone cameras allow in photo imaging and we want to show off the results in a GALLERY SHOW AT THE TECH GARDEN IN DOWNTOWN SYRACUSE.  Take your photos out of the computer and onto the gallery walls!  More info coming soon!

Curious?

Have our hints made you curious?  The answer will be revealed soon-but here's another hint.  Can you think of a way to combine the old and the new when it comes to photos?  Everyone takes photos with their phone now, and most people share their pics online.  PHONOGRAPHY aims to put in new/old spin on the way people view their cell phone photos.  More info coming soon!!
